Getting married soon? Getting married soon and on a budget? Well, join the hundreds of couples that are breaking from the traditional, white 3-tier wedding cake and go with something a little more…well little. The cupcake wedding cake craze has officially struck Austin, and struck it hard.

On Tuesday, Austin-based wedding extraordinaires Chez Wedd hosted an event called “Wedd  in the City” which was an intimate expo of some of the best of the wedding industry around central Texas. Bakers and cake-masters alike were in no short supply. However, it was one such table that stood out among the rest. The Cupcake Bar, a locally-owned bakery, is now one of the top wedding cake caterers in the Austin area. However—it’s rarely actual cake that they supply.

Rachel Stroik, event planner for The Cupcake bar, explained that they opened a little more then 3 years ago and didn’t get into the wedding world until after their first year.

“We had one couple request a cake made of cupcakes and that was it—we never looked back.”

Stroik explains that Austin isn’t the only city that’s caught onto this confectionery craze, it’s sweeping the rest of the country for several reasons—one of which is customization.

Chez Wedd team member Natalie Schilling actually went with a cupcake cake for her wedding in spring of 2010. She explained that she purchases the cupcake stand and decorated it herself. But it was really the flavor choices that sold her.

“You just have a lot more options, with cupcakes the flavors are endless.”

Along with the ability to customize flavors, The Cupcake Bar also boats an impressive list of over 75 toppings to adore their mini-masterpieces.

“A lot of times the bride, especially in Austin, is looking for something unique and that’s exactly what they get with us.”

Other options provided by The Cupcake Bar are giant cupcake cakes which still give the bride and groom the feeling of cutting into a normal size cake. And of course there’s always the upgradable option for a cake topper as well.

So  if you’re in the market for a wedding cake or you just want to satisfy your sweet tooth, cupcakes are making a name for themselves in an outside of the wedding world.
